How It Works

How Belt Scanner MF Fixed Works

Magnetise

Permanent magnetic conditioning bars, one above and one below the belt, magnetise the steel cords as the belt runs.

Scan

A non-contact inductive scanner downstream reads the magnetic signature across the full belt width, with the belt running.

Compare

Each scan is compared with previous passes to identify developing changes in cord and splice condition.

Act

Anomalies are located and reported. Where configured, DED can stop the belt and Programmed Parking can position it — through your PLC.

Belt SpeedTachometer / Belt Speed Input
TachometerMounted to an idler roller mount, within 10–30 mm of its target magnet. The mount design is site-specific and is the customer's responsibility. Standard magnets are 20 × 3 mm discs.

The tachometer synchronises the scan to belt position. Without it, events have no reliable location, scans can’t be compared point for point, and neither Programmed Parking nor DED can operate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Belt Scanner MF monitor fabric belts?
No. The magnetic signature method depends on the steel cord carcass, so Belt Scanner MF applies to steel cord belts only. For fabric and PVC belts, BG5k provides longitudinal rip detection — it works with fabric, PVC and steel cord belts — and CC222 measures cover thickness.
Does the conveyor have to stop during scanning?
No. Scanning is done with the belt running. A long conveyor can take a few hours, and nobody needs to stay connected to the scanner while it runs.
Can it stop the conveyor automatically?
Yes, where configured. Disastrous Event Detection (DED) can trigger an automated belt stop through your PLC when damage thresholds are violated.
Does it connect to our PLC?
Yes, over Modbus TCP. Alarms, automated belt stop and Programmed Parking are all handled through the PLC connection.
Can our team install it?
Yes. Site personnel carry out installation using the supplied documentation, typically over 1–2 days including commissioning, with Beltscan support provided remotely.
Does it require internet access?
Not for local operation. Internet is required for the online portal and for remote support and reporting.

Can it be retrofitted to an existing conveyor?
Yes. The magnet bars and scanner mount to the existing conveyor structure. The belt itself is not modified.
What belt widths are supported?
The scanner and conditioning heads are made to the belt width, so the system is built for your conveyor rather than selected from a size range. Tell us the belt width and we'll configure it.
How often does it need calibration?
Sensitivity is set at commissioning and confirmed against the scanner's live display. There is no fixed recalibration interval; the check is repeated if the installation is disturbed or the data suggests it. Separately, a fresh belt signature file should be uploaded after every analysis.
What happens if communications fail?
The system continues scanning and logging locally, and data is available once the connection is restored.
Can Belt Scanner MF detect longitudinal rips?
It is not a rip detection system. For longitudinal rip protection, look at BG5k, which works with fabric, PVC and steel cord belts and derives belt width from belt edge position.
What software is supplied?
System access and configuration software, offline analysis, data download and online reporting. The first year is included with the scanner; the annual renewal thereafter covers the complete suite.
Can Beltscan analyse the scans for us?
Yes. Outsourced analysis and reporting is available as an annual service if you would rather not run the analysis in-house.
Is anything embedded in the belt?
No. There are no loops, sensors or markers in the belt. The magnetic conditioning bars magnetise the steel cords and the scanner reads the resulting signature without contact.
How far from the belt does the scanner sit?
35 mm from the belt surface is optimal, and 50 mm is the limit. Beyond that the magnetic signature weakens and the quality of the analysis falls with it. The conditioning heads sit at the same 35 mm, within 10 mm of each other.
Why does it need a tachometer?
The tachometer synchronises the scan to belt position. Without it, events have no reliable location, scans can't be compared point for point, and neither Programmed Parking nor DED can operate.
Can we rent a system rather than buy one?
Yes. Beltscan offers the BSMF Belt Scanner on a rental basis.
